Using Cleaning Plugs
GLASSWARE CLEANING STATION
Learn how to get a spotless, crystal-clear shine every time. Select your equipment below and follow our official guide to use your Trusty Plugs efficiently and eliminate messy cleanup spills.
PRO TIPS
The Dry Friction Rule
Silicone slips on wet glass. Always thoroughly dry the inner and outer rims of all openings before inserting a plug to keep it from pushing back out under pressure.
Targeted Detailing
The loading bowl usually has the thickest buildup. Detail this specific area first using our upside-down thermal method or solvent reservoir method before cleaning the main chamber.
Secure Your Plugs
When shaking, liquid pressure builds inside the glass. Always keep a palm, thumb, or finger pressed firmly over the plugs to prevent accidental popping.
HOW TO CLEAN THE LOADING BOWL
The deep loading bowl area of your piece often collects the thickest surface buildup. Because this area is isolated, it requires direct detailing. Use either of these highly effective methods to restore a brilliant shine:
Method A: The Thermal Wipe (Fastest No-Solvent Finish)
- Ensure the piece is completely dry and free of any liquid solvents.
- Using a standard handheld lighter, hold the empty glass loading bowl upside down over the flame and hold it there until the caked-on buildup becomes very hot and starts smoking.
- Immediately take a tightly folded or twisted corner of a dry paper towel and wedge it firmly down into the hot bowl.
- Continually rotate the paper towel with firm pressure. The heat softens the residue, allowing the dry fibers to completely lift and wipe the glass clean in seconds. (Exercise caution: the glass will be hot to the touch).
Method B: The Solvent Reservoir (Precision Detailing)
- Take one of your micro Trusty Plugs and insert it firmly into the tiny hole at the very bottom of the loading bowl.
- Pour a small splash of isopropyl alcohol or cleaning solution directly into the plugged bowl cup.
- This creates an isolated liquid reservoir right inside the top of your piece.
- Let it sit for a minute(optional) to soften the surface grime. Because the plug traps the liquid from draining into the main chamber, you can easily dip a cotton swab (Q-tip) directly into the pooled solvent and scrub the bowl walls until pristine.
- Remove the micro plug and flush with warm water.
HOW TO CLEAN HANDHELD & POCKET PIECES
Small handheld pieces have shorter internal airways and tighter spaces. Here is the best workflow for sealing and maintaining them:
Step 1: Prep & Seal Secondary Holes
Run warm tap water through the piece for 30 seconds to flush loose debris. Thoroughly dry the glass openings. Using your smaller Trusty Plugs, seal the mouthpiece and the side ventilation port (carb hole) first. Leave the loading bowl hole open.
Step 2: Fill via the Bowl & Cap
Using the open loading bowl as your funnel, pour your preferred cleaning solvent (like isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt) directly into the bowl so it flows down into the internal chamber until about 50% of the pipe if full. Wipe the bowl rim completely dry(optional), then insert a final plug into the bowl to create an airtight seal.
Step 3: Secure Shake & Flush
Hold the piece securely using both hands, making sure to keep a finger or thumb pressed firmly over all the plugs. Give the piece a steady shake for a couple minutes. Remove the plugs, dump the dirty solvent, and flush the piece 2-3 times with hot tap water until it runs crystal clear.Tip: The quantity and strength of the solvent as well as how dirty the pipe is will dictate on how much time you need to spend shaking the pipe. For best results clean your pipes frequently. Optionally you may choose to fill the pipe almost completely and let is soak.
HOW TO CLEAN LARGE TUBES & WATER VESSELS
Large vertical tubes, cylinders, and multi-chamber apparatuses hold a higher volume of heavy fluid, which significantly increases internal pressure when shaken. A proper seal and grip are critical here.
Step 1: Disassemble & Seal Lower Joints
Carefully remove all delicate accessories, glass joints, or downstems (clean these separately). Thoroughly dry the exterior and interior rims of the lower joint openings on the main tube. Insert your medium/large Trusty Plugs into all the lower openings with a firm twisting motion. Leave the large top mouthpiece open.
Step 2: Introduce Solution & Cap the Tube
Pour your desired amount of solvent and coarse salt down through the open top tube. Do not overfill! Leave at least 2/3 to 1/2 of the tube empty to allow the fluid to agitate effectively. Wipe the large top mouthpiece rim completely dry (With large tubes it is important to make sure the glass that the plug will be touching is dry or the plug will push it’s self out even without shaking!), then insert your Max Cylinder Plug to seal the vessel.
Step 3: The Palm-Secure Shake & Soak
Because of the massive surface area inside a 2-inch tube, silicone plugs can easily be forced out by the weight of moving liquid. You must keep your palm pressed flat and firmly over the large top plug, and your other hand over the lower plugs. Give it a controlled shake for 30–60 seconds or longer depending on your needs. For complex internal percolation chambers where a brush can’t reach, set the sealed tube flat on the counter and let it soak for 15–30 minutes before your final shake.
Step 4: Final Flush
Carefully remove the upper plug to release the pressure, then remove the lower plugs to drain the fluid into a safe waste container. Run very hot tap water through the top of the tube, flushing it multiple times until all traces of solvent and aroma are gone.
